Quantitative Research Studies

Jordan Said:

Do I need to state a hypothesis when doing quantitative descriptive research?

We Answered:

.....The hypothesis is usually stated up front as the purpose of the research. Since you don't have a hypothesis, just state the purpose of your research clearly.

Casey Said:

what is a quantitative research design?

We Answered:

Quantitative research is research that gathers information using number data. A questionnaire with yes or no answers would be considered a quantitative design (e.g "50% of participants answered yes to question 3"). With this approach you can draw conclusions using numbers and percentages but it is rather limiting.

The opposite would be qualitative research methodologies - such as interviews or focus groups. From this you can look at themes across your sample (e.g "one main problem experienced by smoking cessation is lack of confidence").

This helped to remind me what these methods meant:

Quantitative = Quantity/Numbers/numerical data
Qualitative = Quality data/detailed descriptions.

Hope that helps.

Level of significance Quantitative Research?

We Answered:

The level of significance helps to discern whether you failed to prove your null hypothesis or found the alternate hypothesis to be true. Generally, it's set at .95... E-mail me, and I'll be glad to assist you in some way because I had to do that crap for my senior research paper. Bleh!
