Is studying Religious Studies and Sociology degree a good idea?

We Answered:

criminal justice opens a LOT more doors than any branch of philosophy/theosophy/theology degree will. i have found that with those kind of degrees, inless you plan to join the priesthood... basically all you can do is have very grandeous, introspective, lengthy, complicated thoughts about why it is you arent using your degree at all and why you are a customer service rep in a call center.

theres ALWAYS going to be crime and criminals afoot... but jobs in religion are VERY limited

I know you have thought of every possible writing position and teaching positions. If you had a little marketing and media, how about becoming a campaign manager? Lord knows that we could use someone in the field with a religious studies background. lol.

Marlene Said:

How hard is it to get a Religious Studies degree?

We Answered:

Religious Studies is interesting in that it is as hard or as easy as you want it to be. The bare minimum to graduate with a bachelor's degree in Religious Studies is pretty low; but if you are passionate about the subject, it offers incredibly challenging and fascinating intellectual opportunities. The Religious Studies students at my institution were some of the smartest people I know - one is a Rhodes Scholar, another speaks like 9 languages including Ancient Greek, Mandarin Chinese, Latin, Arabic, and Sanskrit.

What can you do with it? Anything you can do with any other humanities degree. Jobs, graduate school, law school, medical school (if you add the 10 or so prerequisite science courses), whatever. Obviously it is best suited for people who are interested in actually working in that field for the rest of their lives - as professors, theologians, or other religious leaders.
