Teaching Middle Level Mathematics

Freddie Said:

I thought this was quite interesting, what do you think?

We Answered:

Actually Annie, scientific journals usually do use only generalisations when writing papers of this type- academic journals rarely deal in absolutes.

Lewis Said:

Why is it important for middle school students to understand measurement?

We Answered:

... its important for a 5th grader to understand measurement (and that's pushing it, i was taught in 2 grade for American measure, and in 3rd for metric)

What could I do to improve my personal statement for University?

We Answered:

I particularly think your first sentence is very good and expresses a passion and real interest in physics. I think it's very difficult to write a personal statement that has to involve maths and physics.....it's quite clear from your personal statement that really it's physics you want to do, not maths. This could potentially be a problem for universities reading this and they will probably guess that you are applying for slightly different courses.

. First sentence.....tell them why YOU find it interesting, rather than just that it has many interesting fields

. Tell them what you've learnt in mechanics and maths that will be useful on the course and that relates to physics

. When talking about biology and its teaching and how it's helped you by introducing you to a different style of learning and thinking, tell them HOW that will be useful to you in the courses you're applying for

. Tell them WHY gaining a “complete understanding about the working of the universe” is important to you, rather than just telling them that you will gain this understanding

. Tell them WHY you find a career in research and lecturing appealing and HOW the course will equip you for this

. You need to significantly reduce the language paragraph. It's great that you have some outside interests, but you're applying for maths and physics, not a language course. They won't be interested in the exact language programme you've used. Maybe tell them how Japanese will be useful in physics or how learning Japanese has given you an understanding of other cultures. You can use this to talk about working with people from other countries who speak different languages maybe.

. Tell them what you've learnt from teaching these middle school students. What has it taught you about your knowledge? What communication skills has it given you? How will it be useful to you in the future? You can use it to show that you have commitment, reliability and time keeping skills as well, especially if teaching them was a regular (eg. weekly) thing

. Maybe rather than saying “University life will no doubt....” you could say “This course will no doubt....” because that focuses it back on the course rather than just university life.

. Do you have any work experience with anything to do with physics? If you do, put it in. If not, I really think you need to get some. They will be expecting some work experience. I also think you really need some more stuff about physics in the personal statement. I mean, you have more stuff in there about languages, extra-curricular activities etc. than you do about why you want to study physics

I hope this helps somewhat. If you have any further questions, feel free to send me an email
