Some questions on TEFL (teaching english as a foreign language)???

We Answered:

YAY! I loved that someone asked this! I have been TEFL certified since October of 2006, and have loved every second of it.

I did a month long course in Prague from TEFL Worldwide Prague and I loved it. I learned so much and found a job pretty quick...2 weeks later. http://www.teflworldwideprague.com/
Check out the website and it should answer all of your questions.

As for the best place to teach, I would say Prague. Not only is this city amazing, but the cost of living is super low! There is a huge demand for English teachers here, so it is easy to find work and gain experience. Korea and China are also good places to go if you want to make a ton of money. The cost of living is a little higher than in Prague though.

The best parts are meeting new people and getting to travel all over the world. Living in Europe is so fun and so different than America. I have nothing but good things to say about my experience.

Good luck and maybe I'll see you around Praha one day!

I am thinking about living in Thailand and teaching english (TEFL). Where would be the best place to do it?

We Answered:

Depends on what your definition of "best" is. "Best" higher pay will be in Bangkok, but you will have a higher cost of living and have to fight traffic twice a day. "Best" scenery will be in Samui and or Phuket but the pay will be less and you'll be lucky if you get a job there; not many openings for english teachers. Pattaya is ok but filled with many falangs in your situation, looking for a job. My son goes to a private school in Pattaya and they have Filipino english teachers that I bet get paid less than 30,000 a month. Check out the forum on http://ajarn.com/ it's filled with folks like you.

What are the opportunities for teaching English in Singapore?

We Answered:

You can be a ESOL(English Speakers of Other Language) teacher at a international school in Singapore. All international school has ESOL teachers. I went to 3 international schools in my life and each of them had ESOL teachers. You can first search up some international schools in Singapore and see if they need a ESOL teachers. Usually teaching at international schools your salary would be pretty high.
good luck

Would travelling for a year whilst TEFL (teaching English as foreign language) be a wise choice?

We Answered:

Do it! No point having regrets in life. Later in life when you have family, career etc you will not have the chance and you will regret it.

No point working a job you are not happy with, and studying at University to get a degree would be a bit pointless. You have no direction at the moment so you'd probably waste time in a subject that did not interest you, then the job chances even if you have a degree these days is not that great.

I was in a similar position to you, and i decided to move to Asia to teach. Ended up in China, and have been here ever since (8 years now), i am not the only one either many expats here first came overseas as teachers. Many are now doing other things, opening schools, own businesses, exporting etc. Once you are overseas you have your experience and knowledge of English to get a good job outside ESL if you want.

Teaching overseas will give you get life experience, enable you to learn more about yourself, and also learn another language if you wish. You will also make many good friends.

I say go for it! It is anything but a waste of time.

what to do with a tefl - teaching english as a foreign language?

We Answered:

Besides teaching English to non-native speakers, I don't really see what else you can do. The benefits of such a certificate are to be seen only in terms of a career in TEFL; otherwise there's not much interest to it

Discuss It!
